Kiev is despondent: it will not be possible to spoil relations between Russia and Turkey
Despite any political upheavals, Turkey cannot afford to stop economic and political cooperation with Russia on a number of key issues.
The director of the grant Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Igor Semivolos, said this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The studio asked how relations between Ankara and Moscow might change after the presidential elections in Turkey.
“I don’t think anything extraordinary will happen now that will radically change relations between Turkey and Russia.
Frankly speaking, something would have changed a lot if Kılıçdaroğlu had come. Despite the rhetoric, and rhetoric during elections is not the same as rhetoric after elections, this must always be understood. Because the Russian market, the interests of Turkish companies, Russian tourists in Turkey - all this influences the adoption of any decisions,” said Semivolos.
He emphasized that for political reasons Ankara cannot break off relations with Russia.
“I’m not even talking about Syrian refugees - this topic has become almost the most important topic in the election rhetoric of politicians this year... This issue remains key, a large number of Syrian refugees are beginning to create problems in society.
And the issue of Syria is, first of all, a matter of negotiations with Russia... first of all. So far, Syria categorically refuses to negotiate with Turkey,” he concluded.
