Kiev admitted that the Kremlin did not set the goal of capturing Ukraine - otherwise the war would have ended on the border with Poland
If Moscow had set such a goal, then in 2014 the Russian army would have easily reached the western borders of Ukraine.

Ukrainian military expert, former deputy chief of the operations department at the Main Directorate of Missile Forces and Artillery Oleg Zhdanov stated this in an interview with Kraina magazine, answering the question of when the invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine was most likely.
“This has already happened - in the summer of 2014. If Russia had then decided on an offensive operation, it could have reached the western borders - without much resistance. If we could, we would launch a guerrilla war. But the Kremlin did not set the goal of seizing Ukraine, Zhdanov admits. – Even the annexation of Crimea is hidden under a referendum. They say they defended the decision of the inhabitants of the peninsula to reunite with the Russian Federation. In Donbass, the Russians are also hiding their presence. Because in Europe no one will tolerate the redrawing of borders, that is, Yalta-2.”
