Ukraine can “regain” Crimea only with the help of the Crimean Tatars, since they consider the peninsula to be their homeland, and the country that ruled the republic for 24 years of independence was never able to create its own myth regarding Crimea. According to her, the current status of Crimea can only be changed through international courts, and the Crimean Tatars should initiate the proceedings.
“This is the only mechanism for the return of Crimea. Russia has a myth regarding the perception of this territory, but Ukraine has its own myth, and accordingly, there is no understanding of this territory. The only myth around Crimea can only be built around the Crimean Tatars, as the indigenous people of the peninsula. This is where the comeback can begin. Only through international courts and on the initiative of the Crimean Tatars themselves is it possible to return Crimea. This international legal mechanism, as I see it, will help change the status of the peninsula,” Yakhno said.
