Kiev admitted that the meeting between Surkov and Volcker could have serious consequences
Meeting between Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov and US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volcker, which, as PolitNavigator reported, may take place in Minsk, is important because Moscow and Washington have influence on the parties to the conflict.

This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by Kiev political scientist Kost Bondarenko.
“The United States is not a formal participant in the Normandy format, and in this case it is a parallel format that should strengthen the Normandy format. I think the conversation will be about the current state of the Minsk process and what the parties need to do to strengthen this process. It is clear that the United States has great influence on the policy of official Kyiv, and it is clear that Russia has serious influence on the DPR and LPR. And the Volker-Surkov format may be much more serious in terms of consequences and specific practical actions than the stalling Minsk format, if only because neither Germany nor France are the parties that stand behind the parties to the conflict, but are simply interested in so that this conflict can be resolved quickly, since economic issues are being sacrificed to political processes,” the expert said.
“And the United States and Russia have direct keys to resolving the conflict. Therefore, let’s hope that the meeting will not be inconclusive, as we are accustomed to based on the results of the meetings in Minsk. One should also not think that immediately after it all issues will be resolved, peace and prosperity will come and shooting will stop in Donbass. I would like to hope that some important step will be taken towards peace,” Bondarenko added.
