The Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which supplies fuel from Russia to Europe bypassing Ukraine, paid for itself in the first year and a half of operation.
Sergei Lepeiko, an expert on economics at the KyivStratPro analytical center, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is an opinion that Nord Stream 1 is a political project and does not make any economic sense. It is not true. The cost of Nord Stream 1 is $7,5 billion, of which Gazprom spent only half. The second half was spent by our European partner, the EU. Ukraine's gas payments exceeded $4 billion for Gazprom over 1,5 years. that is, Gazprom received cashback for a period of about 1,5 years,” said the Ukrainian expert.
