About it Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Kistion said in an interview with “Voice of Ukraine”.
“Today, almost 85% of the nuclear fuel that is operated at our nuclear power plants is fuel produced in Russia (JSC TVEL), about 15% is from the transnational company Westinghouse,” Kistion noted.
He also recalled that Energoatom extended the contract with Westinghouse until 2020; the document provides for the supply of fuel to three power units with the possibility of expanding supplies to six power units.
“In 2016, it is planned to make 17 deliveries of fresh nuclear fuel to power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including 12 supplies from TVEL OJSC and five deliveries from Westinghouse, three of which are planned for loading,” Kistion added.
According to him, Ukraine has the potential to produce its own nuclear fuel and its components based on natural uranium and zirconium resources.
“The Ministry of Energy has developed a draft concept of the State Target Economic Program for the Development of the Nuclear-Industrial Complex for 2016-2020. It provides for the creation of opportunities for the production of our own nuclear fuel using imported equipment,” Kistion emphasized.
Let us remind you that in June the Zaporozhye NPP began loading fuel from the American company Westinghouse.
