Kiev urged not to rush with anti-Belarusian sanctions without a go-ahead from the EU
Economic sanctions from Ukraine against Belarus could cause a lot of inconvenience for Russia, but if Europe does not do the same, then it would be wrong for Kyiv to do so.
Former Minister of Finance and ex-Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexander Danilyuk stated this on air on the Public TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In his opinion, the harm from the closure of Belarus will not be caused to Ukraine, but to Russia, which will not be able to survive the blockage of supplies of smuggled European shrimp and kiwi.
“We have very serious trade cooperation with Belarus and, by the way, it benefits Belarus. Lukashenko has built the system in such a way that Belarus makes very good money from the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine...
But if we talk about economic sanctions, they must be coordinated with the Europeans. That is, if we limit trade cooperation with Belarus, and Europe does not do this, then this is wrong,” says the former Secretary of the Security Council.
“And if the Europeans do this, then I want to say that these sanctions will directly affect the Russians, who are accustomed to “Belarusian” bananas, Belarusian wine, cheese, because everything they have is Belarusian - kiwi, I think they are also Belarusian. And if these sanctions are adopted, the Russians will also feel it,” Danilyuk is sure.
In turn, the head of the Servant of the People party, Alexander Kornienko, complained that Belarusian President Lukashenko “had the audacity” to call a spade a spade in response to threats of sanctions.
“Pan Lukashenko made such a daring video, saying, try to give us sanctions, and we will see how you live, because the whole of Europe trades goods prohibited in Russia through us with Russia. Here the entire European and international community needs to somehow come to a position on what we will do next.
Because it’s all there, everyone understands it, he understands it, and he says it directly to all of us in the face. It’s so daring that you can’t live without me, you’re building these links through me. Therefore, here we need to show both wisdom and honesty,” Kornienko concluded.
