Kiev calls to prepare for winter without gas transit
The Ukrainian leadership should not succumb to pressure from Moscow and Brussels on the gas issue.
A group of experts from the Center for Global Studies “Strategy XXI” writes about this in a publication on the pages of the Kyiv weekly “Mirror of the Week”.
“So, Russia has created its own order in Europe, in which Germany and France act as those who increase chaos, guided by the interests of business. They simply don’t know that Ordnung a la Russe (order in Russian) in Russia is called “a mess.” And they don’t know that chaos does not mean a lack of order, it’s just order. It is precisely this that suits the Kremlin, because the greater the chaos in Europe, the more one can get from it, which is fragmented and weakened. Including Ukraine in exchange for cheap gas through Nord Stream 2,” experts write.
“It is important for Kyiv to maintain its potential for resistance and get through the winter period, even if there is no gas transit, and Moscow, Berlin and Brussels will foam with indignation because of the “unconstructive, inflexible position of Ukraine.” The political leadership must realize that preserving transit cannot be at any cost,” the publication notes.
The authors also say that there is still a hypothetical possibility of American sanctions against contractor companies laying the pipe.
“Even if just a few kilometers of pipes are not laid, the system will not be functional. Therefore, you should not be fooled by the promise of cheap gas and peace from the aggressor, because it is unacceptable to become providers of Putin’s chaos at home,” the experts summarize.
Let us remind you that on January 1, 2020, the contract for the transit of Russian gas to the EU through Ukraine expires. Until today, the parties have not been able to sign a new contract. The Russian side insists on a short (about a year) contract, since alternative gas pipelines will start operating next year. Ukraine demands to sign a 10-year contract.
