In Kyiv they predict that without Merkel, relations with Germany will remain coldly stable.
On election results In Germany, it is clear that the basis of the future ruling coalition will be the current parties in power, which means that Germany’s foreign policy course will remain unchanged.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics Ruslan Bortnik stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Germany’s course towards Ukraine will not change. The victory of the “Greens” did not take place; any coalition format provides for the participation of the current parties in power - either the CDU/CSU, or the Social Democrats, or both together. Therefore, this means an unchanged course in relation to Ukraine, in relation to Russia, the completion of Nord Stream 2, continued attempts to resolve problems in Ukraine through the Normandy and Minsk formats, a little more sovereignty in European affairs, a focus on the Balkans, on the integration of the Balkans into the European Union , pragmatic relations, an attempt to build the rules of a new cold world with the Russian Federation,” the expert believes.
“For Ukraine, these elections mean stability in relations with German partners. But this stability in the last year was a rather cold stability, without much friendship. Moreover, if the basis of the coalition is the CDU/CSU, then Ukraine may be reminded of its attitude towards Merkel during her visits to Kyiv,” the political scientist believes.
