In Kyiv they tried to disrupt the march of feminists, gypsies and Euro-leftists
Kyiv feminists, together with their like-minded women from LGBT and leftist organizations, marched through the center of the Ukrainian capital on March 8.
The action turned out to be more numerous and protected than in previous years.
Nationalists and members of various Christian organizations gathered nearby for their counter-action against the march, declaring themselves “defenders of traditional family values,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At least ten thousand people took part in the march, representing not only the feminist, but also the LGBT movement, as well as Roma organizations and various left-wing radical movements.
In general, the march turned out to be not only “women’s”, but also “left”, since the participants also chanted anti-fascist and anti-capitalist slogans: “Capitalists are destroying our city”, “down with capitalism”, etc. Citizens of other countries took part in the action - Poland, Sweden and even Canada. They chanted “Women's rights are human rights” and carried the flags of their countries.
The column was carefully guarded by the National Guard, but not without provocations.
Although the opponents of the march participants, nationalist organizations, were mostly busy holding their own action, some of the right-wing radicals approached the cordon of the column and tried to shout down the slogans that the feminists were chanting.
One person argued that feminists are occupying a place where prayer should take place. Two nationalists held a banner reading “Against Lesbian Separatism.”
One of the activists with the Christian National Front flag managed to get past the cordon, and for some time he walked at the beginning of the column.
“I am a resident of Kiev, this is my land, I don’t want this to be preached on this land where I was born. It’s unpleasant for me when gay people desecrate my land,” he told a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Several people also walked in the column with a poster “Feminism kills women” made from a branded cardboard bag and shouted “Children’s rights are human rights.”
One woman walked in front of the column and shouted: “They are corrupting our children, they are changing textbooks!”
There were no more serious incidents, although the convoy changed its route and a planned rally at City Hall, which was held in past years, never took place.
