Ruslan Bortnik, director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, said this at a press conference in Kyiv, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent, noting that in the situation with the Russian Eurovision participant, Ukraine “fell into a fork of negative decisions.”
“On the one hand, if we allowed Samoilova, this meant an exception to those rules that were proclaimed but not fully implemented, since several million Ukrainians visited Crimea in 2014-2017, I’m already silent about citizens of other countries. On the other hand, the most dangerous thing was that there was a high probability that the radicals would not only discredit the authorities, but also attack Samoilova herself. The picture could have been that they were throwing eggs at Samoilova and somehow attacking her. The picture when a person with disabilities is attacked is extremely negative and unacceptable for the West,” the political scientist emphasized.
At the same time, he believes that today the Ukrainian authorities are simply not able to ensure Samoilova’s safety, and therefore, given the risk of scandal, they chose the option of an entry ban.
“This decision threatens the continued functioning of Eurovision itself and will affect the image of Ukraine for the coming decades. The decision remained unclear to the Western public. Any decisions in this situation were bad, and at the root of this lies the wrong state humanitarian policy, which led to such a level of swinging passions, the destruction of the law enforcement system and made the government hostage to the processes that it cherished so much,” Bortnik concluded.
As PolitNavigator reported, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada proposed to take Natasha Koroleva hostagewho flew in for the funeral.
