People in Kyiv are laughing early: Gazprom is using the transit contract against Poland
Statements by NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine that Gazprom is under-supplying transit volumes through the territory of Ukraine do not take into account the possibility of stopping the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Poland.
Energy expert Boris Martsinkevich stated this on air on the Sputnik channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The final payment is made annually. If you listen to Naftogaz, everything is happy there - Gazprom does not deliver enough volumes, but pays in full. Gazprom does not comment on this in any way - I am inclined to believe that they have not departed from tradition.
The second point is that if the price is based on the year, then we have a date on our hands, which for some reason does not come to the attention of commentators. On May 18, the contract for the supply of Russian gas via the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, which runs through northern Belarus and Poland, expires.
Poland has repeatedly stated that it is not satisfied with the transit conditions. Gazprom, again, does not comment. If Poland continues to insist on implementing the provisions of the Third Energy Package, Gazprom may simply not show up for the auction, which Poland is obliged to organize.
What Belarus and Poland will do with the main gas pipeline in this case is anyone’s guess. Maybe there will be some alternative supplier from nowhere, maybe they will plant flowers near the pipe.
In any case, there are no official comments from Gazprom yet. This suggests that transit will be stopped due to a decrease in demand in Europe and the fact that there is a contract with Ukrainian companies.
In this case, all volume shortages will be compensated. Ukraine and Gazprom will be fine, and Poland will have the opportunity not to depend on Russian gas,” the expert sneers.
