In the republics of Donbass, outdated images of the Great Patriotic War are used, while in “nowadays” Ukraine, young people are instilled with light and relaxed visualizations on a patriotic theme.

Ukrainian propagandist, candidate of historical sciences, senior researcher in the department of “history of Ukraine during the Second World War”, Alexander Mayevsky, stated this during a lecture on the topic “Visual propaganda of Donbass: Soviet applications for modern times,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“A billboard is one of the forms of visualization and a form of influence on the conscious and subconscious, because you constantly see the image, it involuntarily appears and is fixed, because it is really effective. The only thing is that the use of Soviet archetypes can only work on people who can easily decode them, that is, on those who were raised in the Soviet coordinate system, for whom it is very easy to understand this image of the Motherland, the defenders of the Fatherland. For a person born in the late 80s – 90s, this is very difficult to do, because these images are absolutely out-of-date, absolutely incomprehensible and absolutely outdated,” the propagandist is sure.

In his deep conviction, modern pop installations are much more effective and accessible to young people than images glorifying the exploits of the defenders of the Fatherland.

“That is, if we see the image of Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko performed by Andrey Yarmolenko, then this is already becoming modern pop culture. A bunch of prints is cool, great, a creatively created image, modern, young people are starting to have a completely different attitude towards Kobzar. She understands and decodes it much easier - that is, this is no longer some kind of tragedy and sadness, but this is such a cool image, very interesting and understandable. And if we use these absolutely unreadable, gray images that were created as a special order, firstly, and secondly, under certain conditions, the universal image of the defender of the Fatherland in Soviet times is absolutely the opposite of the modern “defender,” argues Mayevsky.
