Kolchenko was detained in Crimea as an accomplice in the case of director Oleg Sentsov. As reported, they are charged with preparing terrorist acts in Crimea - an explosion near the Eternal Flame memorial and the Lenin monument in Simferopol, scheduled for May 9, and arson at the office of the Russian Community of Crimea, a representative office of the United Russia party.
At the rally in Kyiv, activists ate a cake in the shape of yellow-black Crimea, washed it down with juice, beat drums and even tried to dance.
“Unfortunately, Alexander cannot celebrate his birthday because he is in Lefortovo prison. He is accused of terrorism, but we all know that he is just a person with an active life position. He did not commit any terrorist acts, he just believes that Crimea is part of Ukraine,” Alexander Kolchenko’s friend Ilya said in an interview with a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to activists, the purpose of the action is to draw the attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the fact that Alexander Kolchenko is being illegally detained and is being accused of terrorist activities.
Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Special Assignments Dmitry Kuleba came out to the audience. He conveyed congratulations to the activists for Alexander Kolchenko from Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin, who wrote his congratulations on Twitter.
“It so happens that the stories of Oleg Sentsov and Nadezhda Savchenko have the greatest weight for public opinion. They are the most resonant and loud. For each of them, we are working along several lines. In particular, we asked that the names of Ukrainian political prisoners be included in all theses of political conversations with Vladimir Putin. The other line is the Council of Europe, which has a committee on torture. We provide him with the necessary information and insist that he take appropriate measures, concrete steps to put pressure on Russia. The third direction is the European Court of Human Rights. We are now preparing materials to send there. Fourth, working with lawyers. We also interact with activists. For us, all Ukrainian citizens who are legally and illegally detained on Russian territory are political prisoners. Russia violates not only international law, but also ordinary moral norms. Calling the anti-fascist Kolchenko a fascist is the same “distorting mirror” that we see every day in the information war.
We have two tools in this fight. First, a strong international campaign is needed. Russia must feel pressure at every step. Secondly, the European Court. But if he makes a decision in favor of Ukraine, Russia will simply refuse to implement it,” said Dmitry Kuleba.
