“On Tuesday, the accounts of one of the holding companies were blocked, and on Thursday morning a maxi show began at the editorial office of the Vesti newspaper. Without presenting any documents, a group of armed people burst into the building and blocked it along with all the employees there. Judging by the insignia, we can assume that we are talking about the tax police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. We regard such actions as political pressure on our media, which objectively cover events in the country and, among other things, provide critical materials about the activities of the current government. It is obvious that such actions, when the activities of the largest Ukrainian newspaper are blocked several days before the vote, call into question the democratic process of the upcoming presidential elections,” the head of the holding, Igor Guzhva, issued a corresponding statement.
“We turn to fellow journalists for support. Regardless of the political beliefs of each of us, we must all understand that a precedent cannot be created when the state apparatus destroys the media. Tomorrow, any other publication, TV channel, website or radio station could take our place,” the editor notes.
