In Kyiv they also don’t believe Zelensky’s chatter on Donbass
Vladimir Zelensky’s statements at the inauguration about his desire for peace in Donbass are so far just populism; the new president’s team does not have a plan to resolve the conflict, otherwise it would have been announced long ago.
This opinion was expressed to PolitNavigator by Kiev political scientist Pavel Rudyakov.
“If Zelensky gave Donbass to Russia, just as Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk gave Crimea to Russia, then it would be political suicide for him. Therefore, he cannot say anything other than “let’s return Donbass.”
As far as can be understood, he does not yet have any prepared options for negotiations, so he cannot say anything concrete. If he had any specific options, they would have been voiced,” the expert believes.
Another Kiev political scientist, Vladimir Volya, agrees with him.
“Zelensky and his team do not have a clear understanding of what to do regarding Donbass. No specific plan has been announced yet; everything is still too hypothetical. Therefore, most likely, the situation with Donbass will develop in the same way as it has developed so far,” Volya said.
