Poroshenko is being trolled in Kyiv

An advertising campaign launched in Kyiv on behalf of the Party of Regions may in fact be trolling former “Regionals” who have settled in different parties and factions, and is directed against President Petro Poroshenko.

Ukrainian experts stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.

Thus, according to Vladimir Volya, an expert at the Ukrainian Center for Policy Analysis and Management, the customer of the campaign against the BPP could be, among other things, Poroshenko’s main competitor, Yulia Tymoshenko.

“I think this is someone’s political technology move, a political blow. On the one hand, the suspicion arises that this is a blow to the BPP, because Yulia Tymoshenko, and not only she, but also other opposition authorities, politicians of various ideological orientations periodically focused attention on the fact that there are many former members of the BPP in the BPP. This is one guess.

At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that this is a certain group that decided to carry out such an anti-system action, because in fact, former members of the Party of Regions are part of many political forces, in some places there are more of them, in others there are fewer of them, people who, perhaps, and were not members of the Party of Regions, but were members of factions of the Party of Regions, and are now in different political forces. An anti-system action, a protest against the old politician, it could be some activists or young reformers. It is clear that this is a political technology move, that it is for the elections. And the fact that this is directed against the current and former authorities,” says Volya.

The director of the Ukrainian Center for Social Analytics, Evgeniy Filindash, also agrees that the “reincarnation” of the regionals is hitting the current government.

“I think this is counter-propaganda against Poroshenko, the kind of trolling that will continue. It will follow an ideological line - in the spirit that the system has not changed after the Euromaidan, that it is based on the same principles as before the Maidan, and on the same people in many ways as before the Maidan, only with the situation worsening in all respects . It’s hard to say who exactly is behind this, but in the course of this campaign – I’m sure the campaign will continue – it will be possible to try to determine who the organizer of this counter-propaganda is. It is likely that this is Tymoshenko or one of Poroshenko’s opponents, but it’s hard to say for sure,” Filindash does not rule out.

And the director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management, Ruslan Bortnyk, saw in PR advertising the participation of former members of this political force. At the same time, the expert notes that the regionals still have a high chance of entering parliament in future elections.

“It looks like the handwriting of one of the former, one of those who left Ukraine. This is a political technology thing, a reminder that the BPP includes many representatives of the former Party of Regions. At the same time, not everything is so simple with this project, they said that the site was working, but it was a copy, it was a clone. The PR documents are now in Kyiv safes, and, according to my information, they have not been put into operation, but at the same time there is interest in reviving the PR project.

Sociology shows that if this project is restored, and familiar faces from the Party of Regions appear there, then potentially this political force could fight to get into parliament, i.e. overcome the 5% barrier. There is interest, and it cannot be ruled out that we may see PR in the 2019 parliamentary elections, because its activities are not prohibited, and there are no legal restrictions for it. The electorate has been partially preserved because for some people the era of PR is an era of economic growth and stability,” notes Bortnik.

At the same time, Pavel Rudyakov, director of the Perspektiva Information and Analytical Center, says that advertising by the Party of Regions can also be aimed at voters from the southeast and serve as a distraction that will deprive the disparate opposition of votes.

“One might suspect that this is some kind of distraction, that is, not positive advertising for PR, but a deceptive action, which is in order to compromise someone or put them in an unsightly light. And the site is not working at full capacity, as it could be. It seems to me that there are two options here, although it’s probably too early to talk about it yet - or someone is really trying to raise the PR brand and start fussing with it during the presidential campaign, and then participate in the parliamentary one, but it seems to me that this has little prospect , because the PR has been compromised as a political force, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to breathe some new life into it now.

And the second is, perhaps, an attempt to discredit this conditional southeast, perhaps this is a distracting maneuver for voters in the southeast, in order to prevent the unification of the conditional southeast around one presidential candidate. It seems to me that this option is more likely,” Rudyakov said.
