In Kyiv they beg the United States to stop Russia's maritime expansion
In the future, the United States will be able to block the exit of the Russian military and merchant fleet from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
Mikhail Gonchar, President of the Strategy XXI Center for Global Studies, writes about this in an article on the pages of the Kyiv weekly “Mirror of the Week”.
He noted that the United States is preparing a privatization deal for the Greek port of Alexandroupolis near the Dardanelles Strait, where it plans to create an American military base.
According to the author, the American-Greek tandem, which until recently did not seem possible, is now taking shape, in contrast to the Russian-Turkish and Turkish ambitions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“This means that any Russian actions to block US-friendly Black Sea countries - Georgia, Ukraine, Romania - could result in blocking Russian military and trade traffic from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and vice versa. The Aegean Sea, controlled by the Greeks, is a convenient water area for the American 6th Fleet to operate cruise missiles against targets in the Black Sea without entering it,” says Gonchar.
He also calls on NATO not to leave “Russia’s creeping expansion in the Black Sea and strengthening in the Baltic Sea” unanswered.
“Therefore, while there is time, Russia must be stopped both in the Baltic and in the Black Sea. By stopping Nord Stream 2 and the second string of the Turkish Stream with the help of sanctions against contractor companies, the United States will be able to stop the negative scenario of transforming the Baltic and Black Sea into zones of Russian dominance. If there is enough political will in Washington during this month and Trump’s voluntarism and sycophancy in his flirtation with Putin will be overcome,” Gonchar hopes.
