Kiev is confident that Lithuania will not bend on the issue of the blockade of Kaliningrad
There is no single position in the EU regarding the issue of the transport blockade of Russian Kaliningrad imposed by Lithuania. However, there will definitely not be a complete lifting of the blockade; there can only be a easing.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Kyiv edition of UNN by Ukrainian propagandist Olesya Yakhno, who is positioned as a “political scientist”.
“At the moment, we see that Lithuania has introduced additional provisions to ban Russian exports. But in fact, the Kaliningrad issue does not have a unified position within the EU countries, because some insist or express a position on softening the decision regarding these restrictions. In particular, Germany. Therefore, the issue will depend not only on the position of Lithuania, which, of course, deserves distinction because it is courageous. After all, the country is located next door to Russia, which has threatened it more than once.
It is now difficult to predict how the European Union discussion will end. But there will definitely not be a complete lifting of the ban on Russian exports, because the decision was made within the framework of the EU sanctions package. Lithuania could disagree with this, as was done, for example, in Hungary. However, so far Lithuania, on the contrary, has supported the decision and does not want to cancel it,” Yakhno noted.
According to the Ukrainian propagandist, the decision on easing will be made taking into account the general security situation.
“I think there is intelligence data, not publicly stated, looking at the general sentiment towards Russia. Relatively speaking, what exactly Russia can use as a reason or what actions it can resort to if this or that decision is made. I think that these steps are also calculated and taken into account. This is not so much an export issue, but rather a territorial issue, because Russia is interested in the Suwałki corridor,” Yakhno believes.
Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced on his Facebook page that Lithuania would not lift restrictions on transit to Kaliningrad despite Boussel’s position.
“I discussed this topic with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission in Brussels. It is absolutely clear that Lithuania must introduce and implement EU sanctions. Lithuania must maintain and maintain control over goods transported through its territory, and there cannot be talk of any “corridors”, as well as thoughts of humiliating Russia in response to the Kremlin’s threats,” the message says.
Let us remind you that European officials are seeking to conclude a compromise agreement with Lithuania in order to normalize the situation with the transit route through the country to Russian Kaliningrad and not greatly aggravate the situation.
