Kiev is no longer against the “Cyprus scenario” for Donbass
The “Cyprus scenario”, which was mentioned by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko, would close the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops allegedly located in Donbass, as it implies the possibility of holding local elections regardless of the presence of foreign armed forces.
Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It seems that Zelensky and his team want to achieve a Normandy meeting, where they will raise the question that Zelensky and his team cannot implement the letter of the Minsk agreements, let’s give in on something so that we can find some kind of compromise, and so on.
But at least now, it seems that Donbass and Moscow are unlikely to make any significant concessions, and therefore this idea of Plan “B” appears, which essentially means the loss of Donbass for Ukraine for an indefinite time... Now the Minister of Foreign Affairs is talking about situations like Cyprus, the division of a country where there is Northern Cyprus,” the expert said.
“By the way, there is an important nuance here: Northern Cyprus is an unrecognized state where serious Turkish armed forces are located, and yet the leadership of Northern Cyprus is considered a legitimate representative of the Turkish community of Northern Cyprus. This is decidedly different from the attitude towards our situation, because the point is that how can elections be held if there are, well, someone says troops, the West does not say troops, but armed people controlled by Russia say.
It seems to me that the example of Cyprus suggests that it is possible to hold elections even in the presence of armed forces, and they are held, and these people appear to the West as completely legitimate representatives of the community, which we do not have,” Pogrebinsky added.
