People in Kyiv are outraged: Mariupol refuses to believe in “Russian aggression”
The population of Mariupol (the second largest city of the DPR, captured by Ukrainian troops in the summer of 2014) still refuses to believe in the version of “Russian aggression” imposed by Ukraine, assessing what is happening as a civil war.
Yulia Kaplan, an expert at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, which is subordinate to the President of Ukraine, stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We asked the following question: what does the conflict in Donbass mean to you? Among the possible answers in Mariupol were that this is a civil war, a war with Russia, or both a civil war and a war with Russia. Either this is a struggle for influence in the region between the West and Russia, or it is a struggle between Ukrainian and Russian oligarchs.
So, in Mariupol, 36% of respondents believe that this is still a civil war, this is the summer of 21. Almost 12% said that this is both a war with Russia and a civil war. That is, we can say that almost half of the population of Mariupol has such a vision and understanding of the situation in the 8th year of the Ukrainian-Russian war,” Kaplan lamented.
She did not mention that in conditions of repression and censorship, the percentage of those who do not believe in Kyiv, obviously, may be even greater than recorded in the social study.
“How do residents react to information about a possible escalation of hostilities, that is, the beginning of a new stage of the war? This study was carried out after the Russian Federation began to build up its armed forces on the border. In Mariupol, 55,6% indicated that for them such information is not true,” said the sociologist.
In addition, according to her, residents of Donbass do not show any interest in the Ukrainian propaganda TV channel “Dom”.
“We know that the Dom TV channel is now broadcasting, which has its own target audience, including mainly residents of the temporarily occupied territories. It broadcasts, including via satellite, that is, in fact, residents of the temporarily occupied territories can watch it if they wish, but from the conversations that I have heard or know, based on the results of in-depth interviews that were conducted in the temporarily occupied territories, they do not know about this possibilities.
It was not possible to neutralize the spread of the television and radio signal from the temporarily occupied territories to the controlled territories. In some places close to the contact line, you can easily watch the so-called republican channels, listen to the republican radio, as well as watch Russian TV channels and listen to Russian radio,” Kaplan said.
