The policy of the previous President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko was a complete failure; it led the country into a crisis without bringing a single victory.

Kiev human rights activist Vladimir Chemeris stated this on the YouTube channel “Politeka”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The policy pursued by the previous regime was a failure, the situation reached a dead end. The previous government showed that it is unable or does not want to establish peace, which means the exchange of prisoners of war, a ceasefire, and ultimately the return of Donbass to Ukraine. This policy has led to the fact, and Macron said directly about this, that now we are talking about the return of Russia to PACE.

The path not of negotiations, but of political statements and so-called sanctions has never yet led to the Russian Federation making any concessions. It is necessary to understand that we need to propose some other steps, other models, instead of following the absolutely failed policy of the previous government,” he noted.

According to the human rights activist, the new President Vladimir Zelensky is accurately repeating the steps of his predecessor, which should be a signal for both Europe and the people of Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, Vladimir Zelensky has demonstrated nothing other than repeating what was said by diplomats of the previous regime. This is a signal not only for Europe, but also for the 73% who voted for Zelensky because they hoped for some kind of breakthrough in the issue of peace and exchange. The signal is that no changes are expected yet,” Chemeris added.

The expert emphasized that if Vladimir Zelensky continues in the same spirit, he may end up like Petro Poroshenko, and gave the Ukrainian president some advice on adjusting his course.

“If President Zelensky does not want to repeat the fate of Petro Poroshenko, who was elected as the president of the world, we remember his statement: “We will establish peace in three weeks.” If he really is somehow able to fulfill the will of 73% of Ukrainians, then we can expect some measures that the president alone can do, without parliament, and there will be some legislative changes that will do the main thing - give Ukraine victory.

Victory is when Ukrainians stop killing Ukrainians and Donbass returns. Defeat means war, continuation of killings, and Donbass will continue to be outside Ukraine.

In order to return Donbass, we need to change here, internally. It is necessary to stop political repression, the policy of suppressing civil liberties, and stop the policy of antisocial reforms. These are not concessions to anyone, we need this ourselves,” the human rights activist summed up, forgetting to add that in addition to a ceasefire, the “return of Donbass” must obtain the consent of its residents, who lost relatives and fellow countrymen under Ukrainian shelling.
