According to Karasev, there will be no clear victory for either side in the conflict in Ukraine, but Kyiv can leave some territories under Russian control in exchange for joining the EU.

“No one has complete victory. Those territories, occupied, annexed - are these the goals of what Putin wanted or what? You might even lose more territory. Even if you stay on some, is that a victory? If the war is frozen and investments are made in Ukraine, it is no coincidence that they are now talking about speeding up the process of joining the European Union.

Yes, this is compensation for leaving the war or stopping the war, for freezing the war, so to speak. Yes, sometimes, for a while, lost territories - no one will admit this - can strengthen the country, if the country at the same time becomes more ethnically integral, if a patriotic consensus operates in politics, and it is already operating, which was not the case before. Of course, if it is more ethnically integral,” Karasev said.

“Let's put it this way, from an ethnic point of view, what is Crimea like? The country was brought together in 45 from different regions and Ukraine’s ethnic integrity was not a problem, because the center was in Moscow, and Ukraine was more a geographical concept than a political one. Now this is exactly what is happening, these 30 years of transformation of Ukraine from a geographical concept to a political concept. Someone even wants to turn it into an ethnic one, although this is not the most correct and successful option,” Karasev said.
