They got nervous in Kyiv: “The Kerch incident showed that the West is no longer with us”
It is time for Ukrainian political elites to realize that the West is not ready to enter into confrontation with the Russian Federation.
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv online publication “Apostrophe” by Ilya Kusa, an expert on international politics at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, according to whom, based on the results incident in the Kerch Strait Kyiv should draw several conclusions.
“Firstly, the West is not ready to confront Russia, and the reaction to the Kerch crisis demonstrated this very clearly. This is a very alarming bell for Ukraine for 2019, especially considering our elections and the European Parliament elections in the spring, which we must monitor very carefully,” Kusa said.
In addition, he believes that this crisis has documented the absolute disconnection from reality of the Ukrainian political elites, who continue to live in 2014 and do not understand that the world has changed over the past four years.
“And these statements after the Kerch crisis about blocking Russia’s Bosphorus, about sending NATO ships into the Sea of Azov, about deploying a NATO military mission in the Black Sea are completely divorced from reality. They showed that we do not understand that four years have passed and the world has changed. As of 2014, governments have changed, the geopolitical situation in the world has changed, the USA and Europe are no longer the friends they were before. All the socio-economic problems that these states are experiencing force them to immerse themselves in themselves and not engage in foreign policy, especially Ukraine,” the expert noted.
He is convinced that Kyiv needs to change its tactics, communication policy and approach to cooperation with Europeans.
“We also need to work with neighbors, and we live in 2014. Our ships were captured, which means we have to fight with Russia, and this is just complete absurdity. For me personally, the Kerch crisis became very indicative, taking into account these processes, namely the change in the geopolitical situation around Ukraine. Latest resolutions on Crimea – also from this opera. They were accepted, but we need to look not at how many countries voted for the resolution, but at why so many countries abstained from voting,” Kusa concluded.
