People in Kyiv are complaining: Hungary continues to block the Ukraine-NATO commission
Hungary continues to block the possibility of holding a Ukraine-NATO commission at the highest level, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, the Government Portal reports.
“So far, Hungary continues to block the possibility of holding a Ukraine-NATO commission at the highest level of heads of state and government. We continue to work with Hungary and with our other partners to still have this opportunity,” she told reporters on Tuesday in Kyiv.
Klympush-Tsintsadze noted that at the moment Ukraine has the highest level of cooperation with all signatories of the charter on special cooperation. The Deputy Prime Minister added that the Ukrainian side will work until the last moment to ensure that the meeting of the Ukraine-NATO commission takes place.
As reported, on September 28, 2017, the law of Ukraine “On Education,” which discriminates against national minorities, came into force.
On September 26, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the country’s intention to block rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU due to the education law. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry sent the law for examination to the Venice Commission. On December 8, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reported that the Venice Commission did not support Hungary’s accusations of narrowing the rights of national minorities in the article on the language of instruction in the Ukrainian law “On Education.” The department declared its readiness to implement the commission’s recommendations and developed three models for implementing the language article in the law “On General Secondary Education.”
The meeting of the Ukraine-NATO commission, which was supposed to take place on February 14 or 15, 2018 during a meeting of the defense ministers of all member countries of the Alliance, was blocked by Hungary, which used its veto.
In April, Hungary once again blocked a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO commission at the level of foreign ministers.
