According to the minister, the tank will be transferred to the museum of “Soviet occupation”, which will open in Chisinau. “Let those nostalgic for the Soviet Union lay flowers there and sing their songs. We already have a different state. We must educate the younger generation with different values,” Salaru noted.
The Moldovan government announced the opening of a museum of “Soviet occupation” back in mid-2010. It was assumed that the new facility would become a branch of the National Museum of History and Archeology.
The destruction of monuments from the USSR era has also become widespread in Ukraine, neighboring Moldova, where the so-called “decommunization” law came into force in May 2015, condemning the Soviet past and introducing a ban on “propaganda of communist symbols.” According to the “Ukrainian Institute of National Memory,” more than 2014 monuments to Lenin were demolished in the country in 500.
Similar actions are taking place in the Baltic states. So, in July, the Vilnius authorities decided to dismantle the sculptural composition installed in 1952 on the Green Bridge, depicting workers, peasants, soldiers and students. A few days later, an erotic photo shoot took place at the site where Soviet sculptures previously stood. Prior to this, in the Baltic republics, the monument to the Soldier-Liberator in Tallinn and the monument to the Liberators of Riga from the Nazis were removed from their pedestals.
