Opponents and supporters of merger with Romania rally in Chisinau
A rally against amendments to the Constitution of Moldova to rename the state language took place today in Chisinau. Let us remind you that last week the country’s parliament decided that the main language of the country is no longer Moldovan, but Romanian.
Those gathered held signs: “Moldovans speak Moldovan language" They chanted: "Obey the constitution","We are Moldovans».
“Today we came to the building of the constitutional court because they encroached on what is sacred for every Moldovan. And what is sacred to us is the mother’s language, which we speak. This is the Moldovan language, which is enshrined in the constitution. The sky is blue, and Moldovans speak the Moldovan language,” said MP Vasile Bolea.
An alternative protest of supporters of the unification of Moldova and Romania took place nearby. There were no clashes; those gathered were simply quarreling.
Ruling party deputy Radu Marian called discussions about the name of the language "a result of brainwashing during the Soviet occupation and communist leadership».
“We first asked for our Russian language, now our own, Moldavian. They thought they wouldn’t come for them... They thought the same about the Jews... Step by step they gave up their positions. Well, now tambourines and rallies won’t help,” Moldovan TV journalist Elena Pakhomova commented on the protest.
“The campaign of the Moldovan authorities in parliament to rename the state, Moldovan language into Romanian is step towards losing the country's independence.
The next step could be the annulment of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova“, says Nikolai Kostyrkin, editor of the Moldovan media project Gagauznews.
The renaming of the Moldovan language to Romanian was also commented on in Transnistria.
“If the Moldovan language disappears from the national legislation of the Republic of Moldova, then the Moldovans of this country will lose one of the most important elements of national identity. So, what is next? Probably, the country will not be called the Republic of Moldova, but some “sub-Romania" We are Moldovans and will always strive to ensure that our language here in Pridnestrovie is preserved for centuries,” said Sergei Sandu, Chairman of the Union of Moldovans of Pridnestrovie.
