Such an opinion in interview Chinese political scientist Yan Xuetong spoke to Kommersant when answering the question of why he advocates the formation of a full-fledged Russian-Chinese alliance.
“From my point of view, both Russia and China are under pressure from the United States. Unfortunately, there is no alliance between us. As I understand it, neither side is ready for this. And therefore we can neither provide each other with proper support, nor further improve our relations. Our cooperation has boundaries,” the expert said.
He emphasized that the principle of China not joining alliances only in 2008, “to maintain an equal distance from the two superpowers - Russia and the United States, without offending any of them.”
“It was in our best interest at the time. But times have changed, and China is now halfway to superpower status. And this principle no longer serves our interests,” says Yan Xuetong.
He was also asked to answer a question about the purpose of the Russian-Chinese alliance.
“The goal is to increase the political power of our states, protect our territory and reduce the military threat from the United States. China has a territorial dispute with Japan, which has US support. Russia has a territorial dispute with Ukraine, which has US support. We have a similar source of threat,” the political scientist is convinced.
In addition, Yan Xuetong described Russia’s actions in Crimea in the spring of 2014 as “a good example of how a country should protect its fundamental interests.”
