There is a smell of war in Kosovo. What will Russia do?
In recent weeks, the situation in Serbia has been deteriorating: on the one hand, the local Maidan activists are rocking the situation, on the other, Kosovo separatists, taking advantage of the patronage of the West, are behaving more and more brazenly.
About this in “Moskovsky Komsomolets” пишет Head of the Progressive Policy Foundation Oleg Bondarenko, who noted that alarm bells were raised by the simultaneous warnings from the British and German embassies to their fellow citizens “to refrain from traveling to the north of Kosovo due to possible provocations.”
The author points out that last year Belgrade and Pristina came quite close to the beginning of the process of delimiting territories (about the possible exchange of the Serb-populated north of Kosovo for two Alban-populated areas of the Presevo Valley in the south of Serbia), but today the parties have returned to their original position.
“Why give at least something to Serbia if you can get everything—this is the logic of the Kosovo terrorists who became the government of the region,” Bondarenko writes.
According to him, if the Kosovo Albanians introduce their newly created army, contrary to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, into the territory of the north of the region, then Belgrade will have no choice but to retaliate by sending troops to protect the Serbian population, which will mean the beginning of a new war.
The expert also emphasizes that Russia means much more to Serbia than to most of its neighbors.
“That’s why Moscow’s opinion is especially important here. An initiative to hold negotiations on the Kosovo issue could become an important factor in stabilizing the situation in the region. Moreover, next year the European branch of the Turkish Stream should pass through the southern regions of Serbia, which is already a pan-European energy project,” Bondarenko sums up.
