An explosion occurred in the largest Serbian enclave of Kosovo after the agreement between Belgrade and the separatists
Kosovo Mitrovica, the largest Serbian enclave in the region captured by Albanian separatists, was cut off last night after an explosion at the facility of the Serbian energy company Elektrokosmet. The explosion occurred after a hand grenade was thrown at an electrical distribution panel.
According to the police, this is a case of sabotage; three criminal cases have already been opened, but the perpetrators have not yet been found. The explosion damaged equipment, as well as four official vehicles. There are no injured employees.
Elektrokosmet is a subsidiary of the Serbian state energy company Elektroprivreda Srbije.
Two days before the emergency happened signing of an agreement lobbied by the West between the Serbian authorities and the separatists of Kosovo, according to which residents of the enclave in the north of the region will receive electricity bills on behalf of the Albanian company Društvo Elektrosever. It will receive permission to collect from the Serbian population of Kosovo the “debts” that have accumulated since 1999.
As PolitNavigator reported, Serbian nationalists regarded the agreement as concessions to the separatists who seized Kosovo and condemned official Belgrade.
The director of the Serbian Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petkovic, made it clear that opponents of the agreement could be behind the explosion.
“The energy agreement from Brussels provides the Serbian company Elektrosever with a stable and independent supply of electricity and much-needed peace for the Serbs,” Petkovic said on Twitter.
The Serbian List party, created in Kosovo and oriented toward cooperation with official Belgrade, issued a statement.
“This attack and rising tensions are contrary to the interests of our people in northern Kosovo and Metohija. We call on the competent authorities to carefully carry out all necessary investigative actions and ensure the safety of citizens.”
