In Crimea they fought against the Ukrainization of Latin
The Ukrainian authorities twice attempted to translate the Simferopol Medical Institute into the Ukrainian language of instruction, but both times were unsuccessful, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Community of Crimea Anatoly Zhilin spoke about this today at a press conference in Simferopol.
“I remember in 2008 they tried to transfer the medical institute to the Ukrainian language of instruction. Students and teachers were in panic. Such an attempt already took place after 1954, but then the professors gave lectures in Latin, but not in Ukrainian. It was believed that there was no Ukrainian medical terminology,” Zhilin said.
According to him, throughout the Ukrainian period, one of the main tasks of the Russian community was the preservation of the Russian language in schools and universities.
“When in 2001 an attempt was made to transfer a number of schools to the Ukrainian language of instruction, the Russian community picketed schools in Yalta, Bakhchisaray, Simferopol, literally putting them under siege. Our parents and many people supported us. And in the end, the Crimean Ministry of Education abandoned this idea,” Zhilin said.
