SBU officer who participated in the murder of Deputy Prime Minister Safontsev will be tried in Crimea
The Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Crimea approved an indictment in a criminal case against a former SBU officer involved in the murder of Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alexander Safontsev in 1998.

The attacker is accused of committing crimes under Part 2 of Art. 209 (banditry), pp. “b”, “f”, “g” part 2 art. 105 (murder), part 3 of Art. 30 – p.p. “a”, “b”, “f”, “g” part 2 of Art. 105 (attempted murder) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
According to the investigation, the accused was part of a gang that operated in Kerch during 1994–2005. He provided the gang leaders with information available to him in connection with his official position, participated in the development of plans to commit crimes in the form of giving advice and instructions, and facilitated the commission of crimes by removing obstacles.
In particular, in January 1998, acting together with other gang members, he transported an explosive device in his personal car, which was later used to kill Safontsev.
Also in October 1998, the accused, experiencing personal hostility towards the leaders of Interforward LLC, organized an explosion on the territory of the company in order to destroy its property.
The preliminary investigation into the criminal case was carried out by the State Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for the region.
The jurisdiction of cases of this category is determined by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea.
