Crimea is preparing for large-scale desalination of sea water
In Crimea, preparations have begun for the construction of a desalination plant to process sea water into drinking water.
The head of the republic, Sergei Aksenov, stated this at a meeting of the operational headquarters on water supply issues.
According to him, the first installation will be built in the village of Frunze, Saki region. Aksenov also emphasized that desalination of sea water is the only reliable source of uninterrupted water supply to the peninsula.
“It’s one thing to look at the balance in Crimea and the sources that are scattered in the fields, another thing is how to supply water from them into one pipe. Even though our sources provide up to 1 million cubic meters per day throughout the Crimea, this is from small streams to everything else: it is almost impossible to feed it all into one pipe and supply it to Simferopol. Therefore, desalination today is the only way out,” Aksenov said.
Let us remind you that due to the blockade from Ukraine, as well as the dry summer in Crimea reservoirs have dried up, feeding the Simferopol and Bakhchisarai regions, including cities.
To the authorities had to limit the water supply and enter schedules, as well as urgently organize the transfer water from other sources.
According to Federation Council Senator Sergei Tsekov, the austerity regime may last on the peninsula for another two to three years, until water supply from reservoirs and wells is backed by desalination stations and alternative sources.
