The Crimean branch of the Russian Geographical Society, together with the Simferopol and Crimean diocese, is implementing a project to install memorial plaques on the site of ancient Christian churches that once existed. The remains of ancient Greek religious buildings are not marked in any way - for a tourist it is just a pile of stones.

The chairman of the republican branch of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS), Gennady Samokhin, spoke about this on Radio Crimea.

“There has long been an idea to erect a memorial sign on the site of a long-vanished temple that existed for more than a thousand years in the village of Rodnikovskoye in the area of the Chernorechensky reservoir, where the Chernaya River originates. I found a description that there was a Christian ancient Greek temple there. We decided to put up a memorial sign, we contacted the diocese, let’s do it together.

But the diocese asked why only one? We have many Christian churches that have been in Crimea for thousands of years. We decided to make such a joint large long-term project and put memorial signs in all the places where there were churches in Crimea. Most of them are not cultural heritage monuments until now, because they are just ruins. The foundation shows that this is a single-nave church. But for now it’s just a pile of stones,” he explained.

Only in recent years have analytical articles begun to appear on the temples of the south coast and the Kacha River valley. The history department of KFU has data on 30-40 memorable places.

“It’s clear where to start. This will be a long story, because we still need to come up with a memorial sign, coordinate with the land owners, and many questions. But it is very significant. And young people are ready to go and help, this is interesting to everyone, especially in Crimea. This rise is associated with spirituality, and it is felt.

The project is interesting, I think it will last for more than one year. There were more than 10 Christian churches on Ayu-Dag alone. We will not only design them, but also popularize them in the media, and this is extremely significant for history,” says Samokhin.
