A unique cave was discovered in Crimea
A unique kilometer-long cave with the remains of mammoths was discovered in Crimea. The Russian Union of Speleologists reports this on its blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The find was discovered during the construction of the Tavrida federal highway a month ago. Speleologists who examined the well found that the cave was created by pressure waters from below and consists of several galleries connected by labyrinthine passages.
The depth of the opened entrance is 14 meters. Speleologists estimate the approximate age of the cave at 75-100 thousand years.
“The cave has a unique morphology, mineralogy and paleontology.
Today, paleontologists work in the cave together with speleologists. They found and identified the bones of an adult mammoth and a baby mammoth, a horned ram and a giant deer. There are signs of gnawing on the bones, and claw marks on the walls of the lair. Some of the bones were crushed in a manner atypical for predators. In order to prove that Paleolithic man did this, it is necessary to find primitive tools,” the report says.
