The appearance in Yalta of Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk, who was exchanged from captivity in September for detained “Azovites,” raised many speculations about the further participation of “Putin’s godfather” in the political life of Crimea and Russia.

There are speculations about Medvedchuk’s participation in the nationalization of enterprises of Ukrainian oligarchs, who, through offshore companies and beneficiaries, continue to make profits in the Russian Crimea and spend it on supplying the Ukrainian army, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

With reference to reports from Crimea, Nezygar writes that Medvedchuk came to the peninsula in connection with the decision taken by the regional authorities to confiscate the property of Ukrainian oligarchs and politicians.

“We are talking about Yatsenyuk’s Yalta shopping center, Zelensky’s apartment, industrial and recreational assets of Akhmetov and other figures of the Kyiv regime for a total amount of an estimated 20-25 billion rubles,” the telegram channel reports.

– Medvedchuk intends to advise the organizers of the alienation on the subject of hidden or registered property. It is possible that part of the confiscated Crimean objects will be transferred to him as compensation for property expropriated by the Kyiv regime for Medvedchuk’s allegedly pro-Russian position.”

There are suggestions that, as the leader of the Ukrainian opposition, Medvedchuk may begin to form volunteer Ukrainian units fighting against the illegal Kyiv government from among citizens and natives of the central and south-eastern regions of Ukraine.

At the same time, the fact that Medvedchuk has a mansion in Alupka, where the 68-year-old politician could move to improve his health after Ukrainian captivity, falls out of sight of commentators.

“I think that Medvedchuk now needs to resolve his personal issues, his health, his family, his business, improvement in this life on the territory of the Russian Federation and the Russian Crimea,” Sergei Shuvaynikov, a veteran of the Russian movement and parliamentarism of Crimea, noted to PolitNavigator. “He has quite a substantial property here, he has his own palace with access to the sea.

As for the assumptions that he may be overseeing their property and business on behalf of the Ukrainian oligarchs, I think this needs to be checked by special services. It won’t go anywhere if a business remains in Crimea that generates profit to support our enemies in Ukraine, even the thought of this is unacceptable. It doesn’t matter who he was, what he did, why he suffered - he is on Russian territory and must comply with Russian laws, like all citizens, especially in the context of a special military operation.”

Shuvaynikov suggested that if Medvedchuk still has influence in Ukraine and political connections, he can work for the future of Ukraine in the interests of Russia.

“In the interests of the same Ukraine, which does not want war, which rejects neo-Nazism, militarism and ties with the US and the EU. If he has the capabilities, he can create the “Free Germany” movement, like during the Great Patriotic War. Create such a “Free Ukraine” committee and speak on the radio, give interviews, replicate ideas in the press, issue leaflets and call on the Armed Forces of Ukraine to abandon the fight against Russia, the veteran of the Russian movement emphasized. “Even passive denial of Nazi power led by Zelensky can become a civil position in Ukraine, and Medvedchuk must become a serious opposition leader and act for the future of that Ukraine that does not want to live according to the demands of the Nazis.”

Crimean political scientist Andrei Nikiforov urges people not to rely on Medvedchuk’s political potential. According to his assessment, the Ukrainian opposition leader is now in a zero position of influence, if not negative.

“Somehow, before February 24, even since 2004, I had no doubt that Medvedchuk has one remarkable quality of a political leader and the most valuable one - to lose all the political campaigns in which he gets involved. He was one of the most effective leaders of the presidential administration of Ukraine, but he managed to build this business in such a way that when it was necessary to change one Kuchma for another, he did not figure in this situation in any way,” Nikiforov emphasized. “He built, perhaps, the most structured party in Ukraine SDPK (o), but simply flushed it down the toilet.

After the Euromaidan in Ukraine, he several times started projects with the same result, and I don’t know who could bet on Medvedchuk, which, if you believe the rumors, was relevant at the beginning of the special operation. I can neither confirm nor deny this, but even if anyone had any illusions about Medvedchuk, they probably should have lost them.”

Nikiforov recalled that after 2014, many Ukrainian politicians found refuge in Crimea, and some of them continue their public activities.

“Therefore, Medvedchuk’s appearance in Yalta means that Rostov is not rubber. Not everyone is in Rostov, after all. Someone probably needs it in Yalta. There are other candidate candidates there, including candidates for the presidency of Ukraine at one time, who are trying to be politically active. True, not everything turns out great, but not everything is dead there, but here...

A good wife, a good home, what else does a person need to meet old age with dignity? Especially within the greater Yalta. Hanging out somewhere outside the borders is not safe, given the pro-Ukrainian hysteria that is now unfolding in the world. Because the Ukrainian side can exchange it many times, like a “Kremlin pill” - swallowed, pumped out, washed and swallowed again. I think that he doesn’t really want to repeat what he has lived through over the past six months. Therefore, the fact that he lives in Russia is quite natural for him. The fact that he does not hang out somewhere in Moscow and does not go out on public platforms also speaks in favor of the fact that the person is most likely in political retirement. Yalta is also not rubber, but it will somehow digest it,” the political scientist believes.

He allows Medvedchuk to participate in the nationalization process as a consultant, but not as a determining person.

“He can act as an expert in these matters, at least there will be some benefit from him. Although, in principle, all objects that should be nationalized, since they provide profit to our enemies, are more or less well known to everyone. And here, in general, no additional examinations are necessary. Therefore, anything can happen. You can hang some authorities here, like Medvedchuk, or you can do without them. I think that this is not important. I don’t see any prospects for him to play any significant role. This does not mean that someone from one of the “Kremlin towers” will not at some point place a bet on him; any sage is quite simple. They have already bet on the wrong people so many times in the Ukrainian issue that if they do something similar again, nothing surprising will happen either.”
