Former Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk is spreading lies, claiming that the illegal transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR was initiated by Nikita Khrushchev for the benefit of the peninsula, the post-war restoration of which Moscow allegedly could not cope with, unlike the hardworking Ukrainians.

By the time the peninsula was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR, most of the industrial enterprises had already been restored here, and in terms of agriculture, Crimea was ahead of the Krasnodar Territory, traditionally considered the breadbasket. At the same time, after the annexation of the peninsula, its development occurred much more slowly than the neighboring regions of eastern Ukraine, not to mention the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR. Crimean scientist, one of the ideologists of the Russian Spring, political scientist Sergei Kiselev stated this at a press conference in Simferopol.

“In the four post-war years, almost the majority of all industrial enterprises destroyed by the Nazis were restored. In 1950, production in Crimea exceeded production in 40, the infrastructure was largely restored, and enterprises were restored. Compared to 40, they are already equipped with new machines, new equipment...

Today it is difficult to imagine, we know that in the Russian Federation Krasnodar is a leading agricultural territory, where a huge amount of agricultural products is produced. And Crimea was ahead in almost all indicators...

We are told that Ukraine has been a blessing to Crimea, that “Nenka” almost tore it from herself, and gave away her last embroidered shirt to clothe the inhabitants of Crimea...

Now, if we look at how many theaters, how many cinemas, schools were built. Let’s say it’s 56 – in the Zaporozhye region there are 33 schools, in the Crimean region – 22, clubs and cultural centers: in the Zaporozhye region there are 82, and this is eastern Ukraine by and large, in the western figure the figure is twice as high, in the Crimean region – 55. There are nine libraries in Zaporozhye, three in Crimea. There are 200 sports grounds in the Zaporozhye region, 42 in Crimea. And so on all indicators,” Kiselev said.

Earlier, ex-President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk stated that the Ukrainian SSR allegedly spent “hundreds of billions of dollars” on the development of Crimea after 1954.

“As a student, I went to Crimea because I had never seen the sea in my life. And we were driving along the road to Sevastopol. I'm a country boy, I've seen poverty in full. And when I arrived in Crimea, I had never seen such poverty as there: the shops were empty, people were walking down the street with swollen faces—the mosquitoes were eating them up. These were not Crimeans, but Oryol, Tambov... They walked and demanded one thing - to be taken away from there. And, obviously, these letters reached Khrushchev... “Nikita Sergeevich, we cannot live here, we don’t know how to work here, this is not ours, take us away from here!”... Khrushchev did not give Crimea to Ukraine, he forced him to take Crimea for himself, motivating Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee that Ukraine, having experience in such areas as Odessa, Kherson and Nikolaev, can help Crimea, which, in fact, happened. Ukraine helped, put Crimea on its feet,” Kravchuk argued.

As PolitNavigator reported, the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksenov, stated that the transfer of the peninsula by Nikita Khrushchev from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR was a gross violation of the rights of the inhabitants of the peninsula.

“The Constitution of the USSR, which did not vest such powers, was grossly violated. Crimeans joked bitterly that they were handed over like a sack of potatoes,” Aksenov said.

He also recalled that in Soviet times, “Ukraine joined the UN and was included in this organization without Crimea.”

Aksenov also recalled that in 1991, Crimeans voted in a referendum for the restoration of autonomy within the USSR, and not an independent Ukraine.

“The will of the Crimeans was then ignored by the ruling elite not only of Ukraine, but also of Russia,” he stated.

In subsequent years, Aksenov noted, “the powers of the autonomy were consistently curtailed by Kiev.”

Aksenov also drew attention to the fact that the results of two referendums in Crimea – 1991 and 2014 – turned out to be almost identical. At first, 93% of Crimeans supported autonomy within the Union, and during the Russian Spring, reunification with Russia was supported by 97% of referendum participants.

“Official Kyiv is stunned by blood and impunity,” said the head of Crimea, characterizing the current situation in Ukraine.
