In Crimea, Kyiv was advised to implement the Constitution and protect the Russian language
The Ukrainian authorities should not come up with new versions of the country's Constitution, but implement what is already written in the Basic Law.
This was stated by Russian Senator Sergei Tsekov, commenting on the statements of Verkhovna Rada deputy, head of the Batkivshchyna VO Yulia Tymoshenko about the need to write a “people's constitution,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports with reference to "Reedus".
According to Tsekov, in Ukraine the fundamental points of the country’s Constitution are being violated, in particular Art. 10, guaranteeing the free development of the Russian language and other languages of national minorities.
“This statement by Tymoshenko is another tale that was voiced on the eve of the election campaign. This is pure populism. Even if a referendum is held, it will not be a “people’s” constitution, but a draft normative legal act that will be approved by deputies of the Verkhovna Rada. The people of Ukraine do not need a new constitution, but in compliance with the current one,” Tsekov said.
Let us recall that after the coup in Ukraine in February 2014, the post-Maidan authorities first tried to repeal the language law, which would have deprived the Russian language of official status in a number of regions of the country. This provoked protests in the south-east of Ukraine and preceded the secession of Crimea and its subsequent entry into the Russian Federation. Four years later, the law was declared unconstitutional in court and its effect was repealed.
