This opinion was expressed on the air of the “Evening with Vladimir Solovyov” program by the director of the Center for Eurasian Studies, Vladimir Kornilov, commenting on the restrictive measures of the International Court of Justice on the claim of Ukraine against Russia.
“Ukraine could not prove Russia’s financing of terrorist organizations. And in this part, Ukraine’s claim was rejected. All that has been said is the restoration of the work of the Mejlis, which in fact is not a problem, the expert believes. – In the end, any Crimean Tatars, including Russian patriots, can register an organization called “Majlis” in Crimea and thereby comply with the decision of the International Court. Both sides - and Ukraine too - are committed to respecting the rights of ethnic and racial minorities. The problem with education in the Ukrainian language in Crimea was mentioned, but this court decision can also be interpreted as the fact that in Ukraine it is impossible to suppress Russian-language education, as Ukraine is doing now.”
The presenter asked the political scientist whether Poroshenko would come out to the people to say: “We are all Tatars today, we are all Mejlis today.”
“Since he is now in London, he can go out to the British people and say that they are all Tatars. But I think ultimately he will present this decision as a victory. Although I was surprised by Ukraine’s position. They have been preparing for this lawsuit for so long. Lutsenko came to The Hague and consulted. They studied for a long time and, in fact, made a copy of Georgia’s failed lawsuit against Russia in 2008. And only literally yesterday or the day before yesterday the Ukrainian media suddenly learned: this decision could go against us. Part of this decision is really aimed at ensuring that Ukraine stops persecuting ethnic minorities,” Kornilov noted.
