In Yalta, during the reconstruction of Massandra beach, a copy of the Eiffel Tower installed here several years ago was demolished. The object was loved by many Crimeans and guests of the peninsula; it was a popular photo zone, so the need for dismantling caused controversy.

"It is high time. One of the symbols of secondary thinking. All these, “Valencia”, “Santa Barbara” and the like, illustrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the value of one’s own, and hence the construction cuts,” says Crimean political scientist Sergei Kiselev.

“I was always annoyed when we turned out to be a “second Switzerland”, a “second Provence”, a “second Sochi”. For starters, it’s not so far from second to fifth or tenth. And most importantly: the task is to be the first (and only) Crimea,” Igor Azarov, the former press secretary of the President of Crimea, supported him.

But not everyone agreed with this position. Social networks remind that the Yalta Eiffel Tower was a good landmark for meetings: “Who could this tower bother? Let’s meet under the Eiffel – it’s like “at the fountain” in GUM.”

“In my opinion, both as a “connoisseur of beauty” and as a Crimean, this tower is a much smaller ugliness than the rusty pipes of the pier foundations sticking out of the water or the bent reinforcement in concrete blocks in many parts of the coast, but this does not increase its aesthetic value at all .

I will repeat once again: this creation is evidence of the secondary mind of its creators. In Massandra itself there are objects, and in its history there are symbols that need to be promoted in the form of art objects, if there is any need for this. Moreover, it was possible to do this with humor, and with historical references, and with good artistic taste, and so with pop-pop. Everything is like our classic: “Who needs a mare,” answered Kiselyov.

Crimean journalist Dmitry Zhmutsky did not support the dismantling either: “It’s not that I directly defended this metal structure. But there is an opinion that if previous generations of Crimeans had been guided by the principle “there is no place for strangers here,” we would not have had the Bakhchisarai Palace (built on the model of the Istanbul Topkapi), nor the Livadiysky (Italian palazzo), nor the Vorontsovsky Palace (England + Mauritania), nor Massandrovsky (Musketeer France). And the Aivazovsky fountain in Feodosia (built on the model of the Istanbul one, where Aivazovsky worked for the Sultan). It seems to me, on the contrary, thanks to everyone who rooted all these elements of world culture here. And he planted Italian pines and cypresses on the South Coast, which historically did not grow here.”
