In Crimea they brewed a vat of borscht, called it Ukrainian and offered to rejoice
A festival organized by the Ukrainian community of Crimea, called “Borsch ob'ednuє” (“Borsch unites”) took place in Alushta today.
The event took place in the Ukrainian-Belarusian restaurant “Bulba & Salo,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is an important event for the multinational Crimea, because borscht really unites peoples. This simple and very tasty dish can easily be found in almost every kitchen in Russia and neighboring countries... Borscht is one of the few dishes that symbolizes the true friendship of the peoples of Crimea and truly unites,” said organizer Anastasia Gridchina, expressing the hope that the festival will become an annual event.
Political scientist Ivan Mezyukho, who was present at the festival, explained the political essence of the event:
“It is important that this event took place in Crimea and was carried out precisely by representatives of the local Ukrainian community at a time when Ukraine had reached such insanity that they began to use borscht as something that divides peoples. It is widely known that Ukraine has written corresponding letters to UNESCO and is trying in every possible way to prove that this is exclusively its culinary dish, while other nations, such as Moldovans, Russians, Poles, can also lay claim to the authorship of this famous soup,” Meziukho said.
The head of the Ukraine department of the Institute of CIS Countries, Ivan Skorikov, on the contrary, believes that the organizers are in vain flirting with the Ukrainian public because of Perekop.
“Such events are held to prove that in Russia Ukrainian culture is not oppressed, but is developing, and Crimea is hospitable for Ukrainians. This is an information message to the unconsciously Ukrainianizing Russian people in Ukraine and the blind human rights defenders of the West.
Although, it is clear to everyone throughout Greater Russia and in Crimea itself that there are no Ukrainians there anymore. Yes, there are Little Russians, southern Russian people who speak and think in Russian, but they shed the veneer of formal Ukrainianism after the historical reunification with Russia.
Sincere Ukrainianists either fled to Russophobic Ukraine long ago, or lay low, and, naturally, do not participate in such events. It would be more correct to name the festival in honor of Russian borscht, because borscht as a symbol of the great Russian cuisine really unites the vast Russian world,” Skorikov said.
It is pointless to prove to the West or Ukraine with such festivals that Ukrainians are not oppressed in Crimea, says publicist Yegor Kholmogorov.
“Ukrainianism is a split in the Russian people. A Ukrainian can be “obtained” in only one way – by de-Russifying the Russian. A Russian (“Great Russian, Little Russian, Belarusian – it’s all the same” – as Dostoevsky wrote) “must be convinced that he is not Russian.” Why support this in Russia, in Crimea at the official level? Either this is stupidity or treason. Not for the first time in the last century,” the observer concluded.
