Sevastopol, September 29 (PolitNavigator, Viktor Orlov) - Last weekend in Crimea, reenactors from Russia and Ukraine recreated the events of the Battle of Alma - the first major battle of the Crimean War, lost by the Russian army, but which did not allow the French and British to immediately take Sevastopol.

The festival began with a litiya, which was served by the dean of the Bakhchisarai district, Archpriest Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The memory of the soldiers buried on the Alma field was honored with a minute of silence.

Then those present laid flowers at the obelisk monument to soldiers and officers of the Vladimir Infantry Regiment and the mass graves of soldiers who died in the Battle of Alma.

Military-historical reconstructions on the Alminsky field have been carried out since 2007. This year, clubs from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Kursk, Voronezh, Saki, Evpatoria, Simferopol, Sevastopol and Zaporozhye took part in the festival.

On the field, reenactors recreated three camps of the warring parties, a Russian artillery battery of three guns - exact copies of those that were in the Battle of Alma.

The costumed participants took to the battlefield, and the battle scene began. The infantrymen of the Russian Empire took their famous step. The French army advanced on the left, and later the British infantry arrived.

Spectators of the festival were also able to see demonstrative actions of military-historical clubs and groups: demonstrations of drill techniques, military rituals, gun and rifle dry firing, Cossack horse riding, performance of military marches and soldiers’ songs, were able to get acquainted with the uniforms, equipment, weapons and life of Russian soldiers, England and France in the mid-nineteenth century.

In the battle on the Alma River, the forces of the Russian army were almost half the size of the enemy forces. The superiority of the Allies was manifested not only in numbers, but also in the level of weapons. Their rifles (shtutsera) were significantly superior to Russian smoothbore guns in terms of firing range and accuracy. As a result, French infantry could hit Russian soldiers with rifle fire while being out of range of their shots. Rifled guns had twice the range of Russian cannons that fired buckshot. Without approaching the enemy within an aimed shot, the artillerymen found themselves in the zone of rifle fire and suffered heavy losses. As a result, the Russians lost over 5 thousand soldiers in that battle, the allies - 4,3 thousand.

After the Battle of Alma, a year-long defense of Sevastopol began.

After the reconstruction of the Battle of Alma, the leaders of military history clubs, groups and distinguished participants of the festival were awarded letters of gratitude and memorable gifts.
