The German Pegida movements in Dresden and its Leipzig offshoot Legida are heavily denigrated in the German press. These two movements, which united diverse elements, oppose American rule in Germany, do not support the influx of refugees, and advocate strengthening Germany’s independence from the United States and Britain.
Last January, a Legida rally of thousands in Leipzig was met with even larger counter-demonstrations. The entire major German press belonging to concerns and big capital calls these movements right extremist. The basis for this was the organizations’ sharp denial of the policy of accepting refugees on German territory, as well as the rejection of the constant policy of repentance due to the consequences of the Second World War.
At yesterday's Legida demonstration of thousands, participants carried a banner saying "Russians, welcome" and chanted slogans "We are the people!" The organization will hold demonstrations and rallies in other cities in Germany.
