“The United States deployed Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems in Lithuania for the first time as part of the ongoing NATO exercise Tobrug Legacy 2017, dedicated to the organization of air defense,” the publication says, citing the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.
The missiles are deployed as part of the “US commitment to ensuring the security of Lithuania” and the Pentagon’s willingness to send additional forces to the region.
NATO exercises are being held simultaneously in Lithuania, Romania and the Czech Republic. In Lithuania, 22 military personnel from Lithuania, Poland, Great Britain and the United States are taking part in the maneuvers, which will last until July 450. During the exercises, it is planned to test the interaction of ground-based air defense units of the allies. The maneuvers are being carried out amid ongoing tensions between NATO and Russia.
The United States often practices the deployment of long-range air defense systems in Eastern Europe. Thus, during the maneuvers, Patriot complexes were located in the Czech Republic and Poland. US President Donald Trump said in early July that Washington had agreed to the sale of several of these air defense systems to Poland.
