In Libya, the situation is in favor of the Russians - Ukrainian expert
Whatever the outcome of the civil war in Libya, the Russian Federation will benefit.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Nikolai Zamikula, an employee of the Institute for Strategic Studies, which is subordinate to the President of Ukraine, writes in the Kiev online publication Zerkalo Nedeli.
According to him, Russia is “gradually being drawn into the Libyan conflict.”
“On the one hand, this can be seen as having positive consequences for Ukraine, because the aggravation of the situation in North Africa is likely to divert the Kremlin’s attention and resources from our state. However, this optimism is hardly justified. After all, it is not Russia that bears the main burden of providing for the LNA, and Haftar is not an openly pro-Russian player. So his situational failures do not mean defeat for the Russians. On the contrary, they can also serve to achieve Moscow’s ultimate goal,” Zamikula believes.
He argues that for Russia the situation in Libya is of particular interest as a source of instability near the southern borders of Europe.
“And in this context, the escalation of the confrontation only plays into the hands of the Kremlin. The more attention other states pay to the Libyan conflict, the more actively they become involved in feuds and disputes, trying to find a solution that will suit everyone, the easier it will be for Russians to act in the global space,” the expert believes.
“In fact, it doesn’t really matter whose forces are dominant at the moment – Sarraj’s or Haftar’s. The main thing is that the echo of the struggle in the deserts of North Africa should be loud and could drown out signals from other regions where the Russian Federation is implementing its aggressive plans,” sums up Zamikula.
