“In Catalonia, Russia put into full force the same apparatus for spreading fake news that it used in hopes of weakening the United States and the European Union. Our editors came to this conclusion after carefully analyzing pro-Russian websites and Facebook profiles. Along with campaigns launched in support of Brexit, Marine Le Pen and the German far right, the Kremlin sees the Catalan independence movement as another tool designed to split Europe and increase Russian influence on the international stage.”
This quote was not taken from a conspiracy theorists’ website, where people gather who are convinced that the Kremlin’s main goal is to enslave free peoples, crush democracy and establish world domination. Not at all. These words belong to the pen of David Alandete, one of the most famous authors of the respected Spanish daily El Pais,” the publication notes.
“Alandete is echoed by journalist Melissa Rossi, revealing Moscow’s insidious plans to Yahoo news readers: “An unprecedented situation has developed in Catalonia. The separatists receive significant support from abroad, especially from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is an ardent supporter of Catalan independence. He has long been suspected of working for Russia, which is trying to destabilize Western democracies by supporting secessionist movements from Scotland to Texas. Barcelona and its surrounding resort towns in the Costa Brava region are a favorite holiday destination and second home for wealthy Russians, who may include mafia bosses with alleged Kremlin ties.
Some have been charged, but if an independent and Russia-friendly Republic of Catalonia emerges, they could be dropped.”
Thus, fearless European journalists and analysts have finally found out: the movement for Catalan independence was inspired by Moscow, out of principle, seeking to put an end to a united Europe, Izvestia sarcastically notes. “It’s not entirely clear, however, how the mass rallies in support of Catalonia, taking place throughout Europe, in particular in the Netherlands, where protesters shouted: “We know what it’s like to live under Spanish rule!” fit in with this version.
