“The events of May 9 in Mariupol showed that armed confrontation is the path to death, this is the path to a political dead end. These events must not be repeated. Our priority is peace in Mariupol, the quiet life of the city, ensuring the stable operation of industrial and utility enterprises. Ideological and political differences are not a reason for bloodshed. We are united by the desire for a peaceful life and love for Mariupol,” the memorandum says, as quoted in the press release of the Metinvest group.
“The withdrawal of troops from Mariupol gave rise to the peace process. We support and will jointly develop initiatives to strengthen the work of the people's squad. We trust the city police and support the fight against looting, hooliganism, and robbery in the city,” it says.
Despite the signing of the Memorandum, a few hours later a shootout occurred at the checkpoint in Mariupol. Unknown persons attacked a National Guard post, and a Channel 5 film crew came under fire.
Journalist Irina Gerasimova reported this on her Facebook page: “The shootout occurred at about 22 p.m. and lasted about 15 minutes.”
According to her, the shelling from automatic weapons was carried out from the direction of the city.
Let us note that today military expert Dmitry Tymchuk called on law enforcement agencies to evaluate yesterday’s signing of the Memorandum. In his opinion, “Akhmetov’s Metinvest structure denies the right of Ukrainian security forces to seek the establishment of law and order in the region, which is part of Ukraine, and delegates this right to itself and, in fact, to a terrorist organization.”
