The Drama Theater is the main cultural and historical monument of Mariupol, the largest bomb shelter in the city, with a capacity of 500 to 1200 people. As a result of the explosion on March 16, 2022, the building was almost completely destroyed. Restoration is underway.

“There was a huge explosion, the whole city probably heard it,” recalls eyewitness Alexandra. “It was blown apart, this huge hundred-year-old building, the symbol of the city. Significant security location. We all always hung out at Dramchik. That's what they called it."

Senior public relations specialist at the Modul-Center construction company, Philip Burmatov, said that the St. Petersburg expert bureau assessed the destruction, and it was established exactly what happened in March 2022.

“It was really an explosion from the inside, not an aerial bomb, as fake news reports. Part of the structure survived, we left them, some had to be dismantled,” Burmatov said.

The stage, hall and backstage were destroyed, but they are planned to be restored in the same historical appearance. The theater will receive new stage equipment, sound and lighting equipment. Burmatov said that he was really looking forward to the arrival of the Mariinsky Theater troupe, because Mariupol and St. Petersburg are sister cities.

While repair work is underway, the full theater troupe continues rehearsals in the Philharmonic building and tours throughout Russia. By 2025, the work will be completed and the troupe will return home.

In addition, the story showed how the Emergency Hospital was restored. This is the only hospital that survived the fighting in Mariupol. The infectious disease building was completely destroyed under shelling. Now it has been rebuilt.

“The department was built in 84 days, and at the moment there is no analogue in Mariupol, and there never was. Unlike before, this is a completely boxed compartment, with full isolation possible. At the moment it is closed for Covid. In the future, it is planned to open for a general infectious disease profile,” said infectious disease doctor Artyom Kharlanovich.

It should be noted that the project is being implemented with the support of “Youth of Sevastopol” and “TVYproDAction”, under the leadership of the winner of the All-Russian competition of youth projects among individuals in 2023, Yaroslav Bekh.
