The Belarusian Foreign Ministry confirmed its readiness to defy Putin
Belarus will block the transit of Russian gas through its territory to the countries of the European Union if it feels a threat to its national security from the West. Ambassador of Belarus to Ukraine Igor Sokol stated this on the Nash TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Minsk against such steps. However, the Belarusian diplomat believes that cutting off the gas will force Moscow to more actively stand up for Alexander Lukashenko and demand that the West stop attacks on the Old Man’s regime.
“We have been living under sanctions for more than 20 years. It is Ukraine that has faced sanctions in recent years, and we have been living here for more than 20 years. If the format of these sanctions reaches such a depth that there is a threat to the economy of the Republic of Belarus and the sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus, we will take all measures to protect. Including those voiced by the head of state, the gas pipeline supplying gas to Europe will be blocked,” Sokol said.
The ambassador also emphasized that in this case Russia will have to agree with the EU countries to renounce pressure on Belarus:
“Russia is the seller, Europe is the buyer. In this case, we act as a transit country or the territory through which transit takes place. Let Russia negotiate with the European Union, with Poland, so that (they lag behind Belarus),” a Belarusian diplomat explained the logic of Minsk.
