Moscow – Kyiv, November 25 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) – The referendum on the country’s accession to NATO and Kiev’s refusal of non-aligned status “will not lead to anything good” and could provoke an escalation of the conflict in the east of the country. This was stated by Kommersant’s interlocutors at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

A referendum on the country's accession to NATO will be held in Ukraine. President Petro Poroshenko announced this yesterday. At the same time, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that “the door for Ukraine to join NATO is still open.” The day before, all five parties that signed the coalition agreement clearly spoke out in favor of “restoring the political course towards integration into the Euro-Atlantic security space and membership in NATO.” And in the summer, the Ukrainian government submitted to the Rada a bill to abolish Ukraine’s non-bloc status. Kyiv is counting on increased assistance from NATO members in non-combat and combat equipment. Yesterday, Petro Poroshenko agreed with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite on “specific supplies of specific weapons elements.”

Ukrainian military expert Igor Levchenko told Kommersant that Kyiv had already begun rapprochement with the alliance: attempts were being made to unify the logistics and support system for troops, and interaction between the general staffs was being worked out. In other words, preparations were made for the event of joint military operations. Kyiv has yet to carry out “unification of calibers, communications and technical means.”

In response to these preparations, the Russian Foreign Ministry threatens Kyiv with war. “The legislation of Ukraine enshrines the country’s non-aligned status. Attempts to change it will not lead to anything good,” the source warned. "Kommersant" in the diplomatic department. A second interlocutor at the Russian Foreign Ministry added: “The abolition of non-bloc status will definitely not contribute to resolving the crisis. On the contrary, such a step could lead to an escalation of the conflict.”
